Following Hurricane Sandy, we leased the land through the New York City Parks Department, breathing life into land that was once an empty lot.The goal of our program is to use local agriculture to encourage healthy food choices, promote good health, spur economic growth through entrepreneurship, and promote a strong sense of community.

 

Over the course of this past farm season, we have grown over 100 different types of fruits and vegetables, including callaloo, snowy eggplant, dwarf okra, and strawberries.  Our chicken coop is also home to 50 egg-laying chickens, producing roughly 16,000 free range eggs each year. Through our Far Rock Farmers’ Market, we are able to bring healthy, locally-grown food to the residents of Far Rockaway and beyond, helping the community combat preventable diet-related illnesses like diabetes, hypertension, and obesity..

 

Thanks to the support of generous donors and contributors, the Far Rock Agro-Ecological Center is able to offer a variety of programs and events at the farm, including tours, farming and gardening workshops and gardening classes.
